DHOOM 3 (HINDI: ENGLISH SUBTITLES)

Run, drive, fly to see Bollywood at its scintillating, shimmering, sensational best; breaking box office records when it opened in India, here is a film worthy of any, and all audiences. The first two were entertaining but “Dhoom 3” is remarkable filmmaking, stunningly- acted, phenomenally, breathtakingly powerful to view.

Aamir Khan, in his finest role since “Ghajini” is “Sahir” an alchemist, trickster, seeking revenge against a pitiless, monolithic bank; a bank that was responsible for the closing of “The Great Indian Circus”  and the demise of his father, (Jacki Shroff in a small, inspiring, sympatric role, as a man whose dreams have been irreparably shattered.)

Abhishek Bachchan, (proving, the son is capable of matching the iconic skills of his father, Amitabh), is inspector “Jai Dixit”, from Mumbai; sent to apprehend and destroy the villain responsible for robbing, supposedly impregnable, vaults.

The vibrant, vital star of “Dhoom 3” is the city of Chicago; and those who live in, or know the city, will love it; hair-raising chase scenes on lower Wacker Drive; titillating dance sequences in front of Anish Kapoor’s “Cloud Gate”, Frank Gehry’s band shell; Michigan Avenue, Lake Shore Drive, State Street, Chicago River, Lake Michigan are pulsating, pungently alive and a spectacular setting for the aerial feats, spotlighting motorcycles, boats, planes; an elegant, sophisticated, luminous, heartfelt homage to a Midwestern metropolis.

Reminiscent of “James Bond”, “Batman”, “Robin Hood”,  testosterone-infused, women are given short shrift; Katrina Kaif, sinuously beautiful, as the circus maiden, “Aaliya”; watching her aerobic dexterity compensates for her limited, loosely defined character; Tabrett Bethell, “Victoria”, a blond, “Stepfordish” police detective could have been eliminated; a minor flaw in an otherwise, vastly engaging movie.

“Dhoom 3” encompasses the essence of the Bollywood genre; a fantastical escape into a world inhabited by extraordinary individuals, super- heroes, capable of felling the nefarious, while dancing and singing and gifting audiences a respite from the mundane; a moment where expectations are consummated, spirits soar, energized by the glory of it all!
