I’M SO EXCITED (SPANISH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES)

Spanish actor, director Pedro Almodovar has blessed the world with some of the most entertaining, creative, formidable films ever visited upon the screen; my favorites: “Volver”, “Broken Embraces”, “All About My Mother”, “Talk to Her”, “The Skin I Live In”. His films have amplified the careers of Penelope Cruz, Antonio Bandaras, Javiar Bardem, and countless others. It was with anticipation and alacrity that I  attended the first showing of “I’m So Excited” , expecting the trifecta: terrific acting, scintillating comedic dialogue, all cloaked with the indissoluble genius of Almodovar; instead of what could have been, should have been, an auspicious “camp”, joyful romp, celebration of the gay aesthetic, fizzles, loses its helium; cavalierly focusing on drugs, alcohol, meaningless sexual escapades; set in a handicapped airplane, circling Toledo, Spain.

With the exception of the Pointer Sisters, “I’m So Excited”; reminiscent of “La Cage aux Folles”; three airline stewards (Javiar Camara, Raul Arevalo, Carlos Areces) terrifically mime the lyrics, dance with aerobic agility; enchant the passengers; it was uproariously compelling, a challenge to remain stationary; but sadly could not sustain the energy it ignited for a few raucously, rapturous moments.

“I’m So Excited” lacks the inventiveness, and depth of Almodovar’s previous films; the characters are shallow, stilted, synthetic;  barely a modicum of grit, uninspiring to the point of monotony; unconcerned if the plane and its vacuous, sexually-surreptitious pilots, land safely, or are swallowed by the mammoth graveyard of negligible films that should not have been imagined, let alone realized.

TWO STARS!!

  1. You speak/write truth. I hope he is listening/reading….at least is attentive to his own work.

  2. Dear Penflix,
I agree with your comments about previous Almadovar films, I’ve been a devotee from the start, so I blindly ignored the signs and hustled to I’M SO EXCITED as soon as it opened. Yikes. I think your two-star rating is generous for this remarkably disappointing film.

  3. I think this movie was very funny, interesting and captivating like all of Almodovar’s movies in the past. This movie shows us human stories with his usual twist, the fact that all the stories are based in sex, drugs and violence makes for an AWESOME story line. I disagree with the other comments. the movie is actually good and very funny specially if you know gay people or have some in your life. (I have a feeling the comments before don’t have gay people in their life or are homophobes because it is obvious they missed a lot of the movie)

  4. i think this movie was brilliant, i have been an Almodovar fan for years and i think I’m so Excited is absolutely great. Shame that a lot of people don’t get it.

    • HAPPY FOR YOU THAT YOU DISCOVERED WHAT SO MANY OF US DID NOT! EXCEPT FOR THE SONG I WAS TOTALLY DISENCHANTED. THANK YOU FOR COMMENTING, P.
