POINT BLANK

(Not to be confused with John Boorman’s 1967 film “Point Blank”) The French have done it again! After seeing “Mesirne: Killer Instinct” and its sequel, “Public Enemy Number One” it has become natural to expect the thrills and adrenaline- pumping action from this nation of master filmmakers, in this scenario Fred Cavaye. “Point Blank”  seethes with kaleidoscopic fury from one ... THE INTERRUPTERS (2nd Posting; now at Gene Siskel FILM CENTE

Without question this is a FIVE STAR documentary; an inspirational, awe-inspiring film about making a difference; all the protagonists are worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize. This should be required viewing for public school students, universally. Steve James (“Hoop Dreams”) and Alex Kotlowitz (“There Are No Children Here”), Oak Park, Illinois residents, have given birth to a monument, celebrating a ... Read More »

THE HELP

This joyous, delightful, hummingly- satisfying film based on the 2009 best selling book by Kathryn Stockett is summer fare at its grandest. If you read the book you will recognize compelling, incredible casting; each actor perfectly captures their literary doppelganger. Not having a Southern background or heritage, I found the book problematic in the commencing chapters but due to Stockett’s ... Read More »

THE GUARD

Creative genius runs in the McDonagh family. Martin McDonagh, “In Bruges” and now brother Michael give unconventional slants  and interpretations on crime, criminals and law enforcement. The pairing of Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, as intelligent hired assassins, hiding “In Bruges”  kept audiences on a titillating tightrope of anticipation and suspense for the entirety of the film. “The Guard” serves ... FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS

Sports and movies; two genres that eliminate elitism. Regardless of gender, race, education, all are equals rooting for our favorite team, actor; every man’s /woman’s opinion is fraught with legitimacy, viability and intrinsically correct. That being said many of you found “Friends With Benefits” distasteful, stupid and trite; while others rained shimmering praise on the film. With respect for both ... Read More »

THE DEVIL’S DOUBLE. ROBBER

Dominic Cooper gives a ravishing, scintillating, stunning dual performance as Uday Hussein, the poster boy for evil incarnate and Latif Yahia the unfortunate lookalike who must “extinguish” his honorable character and impersonate Uday, at the devil’s whim. The film is based on the autobiographical novel by Yahia. The portrayals are so gifted that never once do you confuse the two ... Read More »

ANOTHER EARTH

Here is a film for the cerebral, metaphysical, scientific, amateur astronomers. A strange, wildly wonderful creation written by Mike Cahill and Brit Marling.  Marling, with a Helen of Troy countenance is “Rhoda”, a seventeen- year- old, celebrating her acceptance to M.I.T. when a collision irreparably, irretrievably alters her fate. Rhoda is bifurcated, wounded but searches,  sees and believes in another ... Read More »

SARAH’S KEY. ALSO THOSE OF YOU INTERESTED IN THE ALASKA TRIP MAY CHECK IT OUT ON THIS SITE!

This film based on the book by Tatiana de Rosnay, starring the luminous, talented Kristin Scott Thomas should be seen, if only for its historical accuracy. On July 16, 1942 the French police rounded up 13,000 Jews, many from the Marais district in Paris; cramping them in suffocating conditions in an indoor bicycle -racing stadium (Velodrome d’Hiver), before transporting them ... TABLOID

Rarely has a film/documentary left me more baffled or conflicted; vacillating between the revelations of Joyce McKinney, a femme fetal who supposedly stalked, kidnapped, manacled and raped her Mormon lover and the Tabloids who paint her as a nymphomaniac/nun. Errol Morris (“Fog of War”) allows the aging victim to aggrandize , emote blatantly throughout this 88 minute saga of the ... Read More »
